Summer Financial Checklist

Seven jobs to tick off before summer ends

Nothing urgent, just some admin that’s typically easy to let slide. With the checklist below, and ~25 minutes of your time, you should be all set.

01. Review your Will

Things change all the time, and it’s important to ensure your Will stays up to date.

If yours hasn’t been looked at in a few years, it’s worth confirming it still says what you’d want it to say.

02. Check your Lasting Powers of Attorney

You may recall our recent article on LPAs.

If you don’t have both a Property & Financial Affairs LPA and a Health & Welfare LPA in place, now’s a good time to sort these. If you do, just check your chosen attorneys are still the right people for the job.

03. Update your pension beneficiary nominations

At present, pensions sit outside of your estate – For IHT purposes this will change from April 6, 2027 – which means it’s your nomination form, and not your Will that decides who benefits.

It’s worth double checking it still reflects your wishes, especially after any big life changes.

04. Make sure you’re using this year’s allowances

Your ISA allowance resets each tax year and doesn’t carry forward. Use it or lose it. When you have a plan with us, we’ll ensure you remain on track.

Pension allowances work slightly differently, with scope to carry forward unused allowances from previous years depending on your individual circumstances.

If you’re unclear if you’re on track with the above, it’s worth checking with your adviser.

05. Review your protection policies

Life cover, income protection, critical illness cover – these are typically set up once and forgotten about. Take a moment to check they still match your mortgage, your dependents, and your circumstances today.

If you’re unsure, drop Natalia a line and she’ll gladly help. Natalia.Marzec@citygatefp.co.uk

06. Let us know if anything’s changed

New job, new address, a change in health, a new addition to the family.

We’re always keen to hear what’s going on in your lives, but this is also important to ensure your financial plan accurately reflects where you are in life today and where you’d like to get to.

07. Organise your important documents

Will, LPAs, policy documents, pension and investment statements – gather them in one place, and make sure someone you trust knows where to find them if they ever needed to.

OR ask for early access to the new Citygate portal and store the information centrally!
